Businesses in Guernsey help spread Christmas joy by collecting gifts for elderly residents in Guernsey.

The initiative, now in its third year, will mean that more than 500 residents, who receive community nursing and care in the Island, will receive a present this Christmas. This year, leading fiduciary and administration services provider, Estera (which started the initiative), have worked with a number of organisations including Heritage, Offshore, Healthspan, Terra Firma, Mourant Ozanne, BDO, RBS International, Carey Olsen, Barclays, FCG, Partners Group and Freelance, to provide the logistics to collect and deliver the parcels.

Staff at businesses were encouraged to donate to the appeal to make sure as many people as possible received something at Christmas. So far, the initiative has collected more than 500 parcels, ready to be delivered.

For some of these Guernsey residents, the only social contact they have over the holiday season is a visit from the community nurse, due to health, frailty and immobility making them housebound. This means the gifts from the team at Estera, and the other companies who get involved in the project, are precious to recipients.

Donations can vary from a tin of biscuits to a pair of warm socks, but following feedback from previous years, a selection of small items such as a puzzle book, chocolate bar and bar of soap is received particularly well.

Gift givers are also encouraged to include a short message to add a touch of personalisation and make the parcel extra special.

Theresa Prince, Community Health Manager of Adult Community Services commented “Theresa Prince, Community Health Manager of Adult Community Services commented “Many people in our community receive care services in their own homes every day of the year. This means that they may not be able to get out as they once used to and enjoy the festivities in the same way. The gift to each person acknowledges the part that they play in our community and although may not be seen out and about as often as they once were, are not forgotten and are highly respected individuals.

It’s a privilege to be invited into a person’s home especially at Christmas time and hopefully the gift will make their day a little brighter. We are extremely thankful to each person who has contributed to this initiative and has helped to raise awareness of care in the community, that is provided to the people of Guernsey.

Mel Torode, Operations Director of Estera Guernsey, says “We are proud to co-ordinate this wonderful initiative, which was the brain-child of one of our managers, Sarah Felmingham. The pleasure it gives to those in the community that really need it is something special to us all.”

The donation will take place on Tuesday 12 December at 1pm, at the Castel Hospital. It is expected to be a joyful and festive sight with hundreds of beautifully wrapped gifts being handed over by representatives from the partner companies to the community nurses.
